from the fourth to sixth month. The antifungal treatment lasted for six months. He is under our follow-up for the past one year and he made complete neurological recovery. Fungi are common in the environment, but only a few are pathogenic. In general, fungi are organisms of low pathogenicity, emerging as opportunistic organisms thriving in a compromised host, however, some will infect even normal hosts.[1-3] In the nervous system, the infection can be found in the cerebral parenchyma, the meninges or the vascular system.[1] Fungal infection as an etiology of brain abscess is common in immunosuppressed patients either due to systemic illness or due to drugs.[4] Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common human pathogen in the genus Aspergillus. It has branching septate hyphae varying from 4-12 mm in width, which show dichotomous branching and produce numerous spores on the tips of long conidiophores.[1] Aspergillosis is diagnosed on direct examinations and culture, however, the diagnosis of aspergillosis of the central nervous system (CNS) is difficult. Idiopathic CD4+ T-lymphocytopenia--a diagnostic dilemma.
The devastating global impact of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has greatly sensitized the public to the threat of new microbes that are capable of wrecking havoc on the world's population. The HIV virus infects and depletes CD4+ T lymphocytes. However cases have been described with profound CD4+ T cell lymphocytopenia but without evidence of HIV infection, a condition now termed as ...
متن کاملSuppressed without a Cause: A Case of Idiopathic Immune Deficiency
We report a case of a 45-year-old male who presented with a headache, fever, vomiting, somnolence, and difficulty walking for 10 days. His cerebrospinal fluid studies revealed cryptococcal meningitis. Chest and abdominal computed tomography (CT) scans showed splenomegaly along with mediastinal, retroperitoneal and inguinal lymphadenopathy. CD4 count turned out to be 208 μL-1. Human immunodefici...

Cryptococcus neoformans is a leading cause of invasive cryptoccocal infections which include meningitis/meningoencephalitis, cerebral cryptococcoma, invasive pulmonary and mediastinal infection. Invasive infection is mainly diagnosed in immunocompromised patients, especially in HIV-infected individuals. There is a rising number of patients with invasive cryptococcal infections in immunocompromi...

متن کاملComparison of Cryptococcal Antigenemia between Antiretroviral Naïve and Antiretroviral Experienced HIV Positive Patients at Two Hospitals in Ethiopia
BACKGROUND Cryptococcal meningitis is a major cause of HIV/AIDS-related deaths in Africa. Cryptococcosis is a neglected killer. However, meningitis can be prevented by early cryptococcal antigen (CrAg) screening and preemptive antifungal treatment during a prolonged period of detectable, subclinical infection. We determined the prevalence of cryptococcal antigenemia in comparison to CD4 count a...
